We have a Winner and a Retreat!

Tuesday, September 17th, 2019

This morning I glanced at the calendar while tossing a few more items into my luggage from the office.

Yes I am back on the road today! Whoo Hoo! Look out Kalamazoo Michigan and the Log Cabin Quilters I am headed your way in a few hours!

But what I realized when I looked at the calendar and the “gigs on the wall” as we refer to it here at Chez Depre, that we are just 6 months away from the Mickey ‘n Memphis quilt retreat. I am so looking forward to this. I am excited about the format of my teaching and spending time with a group of about 25 for several days.

When Debby, the owner of the retreat, I am just the happily hired help, and I discussed putting this together I stressed that I would really like a small group, one where we can actually get to know one another with lots of time to “free style” as I say. Individual projects can be worked on and impromptu discussions about fabric/color choices and just working out project problems or sharing a skill in a 20 min demo can happen.

Yes there is some structure with two classes but the learning/sharing doesn’t stop when “class” is done. I can’t wait to slip into my jammies and put my foot down on my machine next to everyone else, share some stories, laugh and enjoy.

If you are interested in joining our small numbers retreat in March 2020 in Memphis please click here for info and contact Debby at the email on the PDF as she is handling all the details. You can also find more info about the retreat by reading the April blog here. Hope to meet you there!

Now onto the pillowcase winner from Saturday’s LIVE….drumroll….

The random number generator chose:

and the winner is!

Kathryn congrats! I have sent you an email and hope to hear from you soon.

And a big Thank You to everyone for your fun comments/answers to the Halloween question on the last blog. Thanks for playing along!

Have a great day,

Mickey ‘n Memphis Retreat!

Tuesday, April 23rd, 2019

I have always said I live a bit of a life of kismet.  Sure, I work hard, and not everything pans out but many times in my life I have found myself in the right place at the right time.

And such was the case last September.

I was teaching at the PUPs retreat in Memphis TN.  This is a private guild retreat and they bring in 2-3 teachers and a vendor!   It is quite the retreat!   And there was a lot of communication back and forth to make sure it would work like clockwork.  Debby was running the show and I was impressed.  She got it done and did it well.

I flew into Memphis as the cost of airfare beat the cost of driving by quite a lot at the time.   So Debby picked me up at the airport and we spent some time driving to the retreat location.    And we chatted.  And I found out she had been overseeing this retreat (and others) for the guild for a number of years.

I complimented her on her management skills and said it was pleasure to work with someone who had it all figured out and made my life easier.     And then we talked about quilting, kids, lives etc and enjoyed our ride together.

And the retreat center was lovely, the food tasty, the location and accomodations clean, sweet smelling and comfortable, and the company fantastic.  It was a wonderful experience.

And Debby and I drove back to the Memphis airport for my early flight on Sunday in the wee hours of the morning.

And at O’Dark-Thirty that Sunday morning we realized why our paths were meant to cross.

Debby was wanting to put the skill set she had built up arranging and running retreats into a business plan and I was thinking about finding someone to set up and run 1-2 retreats for me a year.  I want to teach.  I don’t want to run the show.   So I am more then happy for someone else to do so and be paid for their talents.  I just want to teach and enjoy the time with the quilters.

It was a bit of a surreal ride as both of us were spewing ideas at each other that obviously have been well thought out.

And the Mickey ‘n Memphis Quilt Retreat was born.

You can find the retreat information brochure here.

The Retreat is Thursday, March 19, 2020 to Sunday, March 22, 2020.    Without even thinking about it, we decided on the weekend that covers National Quilting Day!     It was meant to be…kismet!

The retreat will be held at St. Columba Episcopal Retreat Center in Memphis, TN. It is a beautiful retreat center tucked into the woods within the city limits. You can find out more about the location here.

I will be teaching hand piecing – the Carolina Favorite Block.

And the Tussie Mussie Quilt. This pattern will be releasing within the next 2 weeks and is included in your retreat fee.

I can hardly wait to get in the jeep and head to Memphis.   Looking forward to sharing some laughs, meals, coffee! and brainstorming quilting ideas for your projects and mine in the evenings together.  And sharing my skill set of teaching with everyone during the retreat. Yes, there is a schedule. Events need schedules.  But with just 26 retreaters, even with a full house it will really be easy-going and informal time together.

Just what I and envisioned for a retreat and put together beautifully by Debby. I can’t say enough how happy I am that our paths crossed.

In the brochure you will find the contact info to reach Debby with any questions you may have or to secure your reservation. She is handling all of that so please know that if you email me for info it may put you behind in line. Please contact Debby directly at the email found on the PDF.

Enjoy your day,
